Across the country, we’re seeing communities being forced to deal with a new wave of surging COVID-19 cases. As new local and state restrictions are going into place, families everywhere are adjusting holiday plans to keep their loved ones safe.
A belief in the power of time outdoors is core to who we are as a co-op and a community. And through all the challenges of 2020, it has been truly inspiring to see our members, our employees and people coast-to-coast embrace the power of time spent outside. We have helped so many of you buy your first bikes, tackle a virtual running challenge or find an adventure close to home. I am extremely grateful to all our employees who have shared their expertise, passion and tireless service to the communities we serve.
As we head into the colder months and the number of COVID-19 cases continues to rise, the co-op is working hard to make sure that we continue to safely serve you. Since the pandemic began, we’ve prioritized the health and safety of our customers and employees, and you can count on us to continue doing that.
We’ve spent the past several months building new ways to help you get the gear and expertise you need even when you can’t shop with us in the same ways you’re used to. Buy Online, Pick Up in Store, curbside pickup and zero-contact bike shop services are helping our members save time and stay safe. As we enter the holiday shopping season, we’re already starting to see longer shipping times with some of our partners. Buying online for in-store or curbside pick-up are the best ways to get the gear you’ve ordered, quickly.
We’ve also streamlined our online returns process. And while we will never be able to completely replicate the in-store experience digitally, our new Virtual Outfitting program and online publication, Uncommon Path, are helping you get the advice and expertise you need from the comfort of your homes.
When you do choose to come into an REI store, you can feel confident in our best-in-class safety standards that include enhanced cleaning protocols, required CDC-approved face coverings for employees and customers alike, reduced numbers of people allowed in our stores at one time and new virtual waitlists to save your place in line. If you have any questions, check your local store page online for services, status and hours of operation. It’s the best way to get up-to-date information about how we’re serving members at your local REI.
As a co-op, we’re a community of people who have built our lives around the power of time outdoors, and this year we’ve all been reminded again and again of its importance—for healing, for solace and for joy. No matter what your fall and winter outdoor adventures look like, and no matter what you need to get out there, we’re here to help.
Keep finding those small moments of joy outdoors where you can.
In gratitude and in health,
Eric Artz
