Blind Climber Attempts Tien Shan Routes in Kazakhstan

Climbers Erik Weihenmayer and Rob Raker went to Kazakhstan’s Tien Shan mountains a goal in mind: Climb the 250-meter tower called “The Bastion” and a classic rock route called Oktyabryonok, or “child of the revolution,” named after those born in October, the month of the Russian Revolution.

The team has to overcome winter conditions and navigate icy rock patches. As a blind climber, Erik has even more of a challenge when his hands and feet go numb.
