Reflections From a 75-Year REI Member

Chuck has been an REI Member since 1940 when he began climbing peaks around the Pacific Northwest.

His first Mount Rainier climb was in 1940 while taking a local climbing course. After completing the climb and the course, he continued to climb the volcano as a guide. He’s been an avid outdoor enthusiast ever since.

    Yes, well, speaking from recent experience while picking up an order, I wish that the counter representatives at the Bozeman REI were less disdainful of septuagenarians. I am sure that Corporate REI is not, but I was discouraged to see a display of cold condescension – may I say “ageism”? – so boldly displayed by representatives of a local REI. I was doubly surprised because I have found the floor representatives at the Bozeman REI have been so accommodating and respectful, indeed helpful, without being unctuous or cloying.

    Having supervised several score employees up to a few years ago, I understand problem “counter fatigue” and employee “bad days” but when a customer is polite and obliging as I was, one expects that the employee would “cowgirl up” and make their feelings less transparent. I think some closer supervision of the counter … and some retraining might be in order in Bozeman.
