The first few flurries signal the perfect time to figure out your gear transport options, so you’ll be ready as soon as the lifts open. Here are a few tips that will help you keep your gear organized and in great shape from your driveway to the snow and back.
To Roof Rack or Not to Roof Rack
The first decision you’ll have to make is whether you want to carry your gear on a roof rack.
Pros:
- Frees up space inside the car for people and gear.
- Gear is easy to load and unload.
- Rooftop storage can be useful year-round.
Cons:
- A full roof rack system can be expensive up front.
- Racks and snow gear can cause loud wind noise while driving.
- Road spray and salt can damage your gear.
Packing Your Car
If you decide to pack your car full of gear, here are a few tips for maximizing space and keep things in order.
- Start with a clean(ish) car.
- Make a list so you don’t forget anything.
- Pack in reverse order (i.e. put the things you’ll need first in last).
- Make sure you don’t cover your winter car emergency kit.
- Keep your ski or snowboard boots inside the main cabin of your car. This will keep them warm and soften the material.

- Bring garbage bags for wet clothes on the way home.
