Monumental: Skiing Our National Parks

Those who are unaccustomed with the nuances of the outdoors often ask what fuels us recreationists to go deeper into the woods. As skiers, we seek untracked powder snow and solitude found in peaceful, snowy environs.

It was this desire that inspired POWDER, The Skier’s Magazine, and KGB Productions to team up with REI Co-Op on a ski film, called Monumental: Skiing Our National Parks, to celebrate the 100-year anniversary of the U.S. National Park System. When Congress passed the National Park Service Organic Act and President Woodrow Wilson signed it into law on August 25, 1916, few politicians, or outdoorsmen, at that time could have predicted that these wild places would be used for skiing.

Monumental 1

This Monumental project—from the 40-minute part documentary/part action ski film, 150-page hardcover coffee-table-style book, and multimedia digital feature—seeks to pay homage to the explorers, naturalists, writers, environmentalists, historians, and politicians that toiled to preserve these amazing spots. Meanwhile, it serves to educate skiers and recreationists on the beautiful history of these magical parks while encouraging all of us—amateur and experienced outdoorsmen—to go deep and channel their inner explorer. – John Stifter, executive producer of Monumental and Powder Productions
