Finding Your True North with Emily Miller

Transcript

The Rebelle Rally is the first women’s off-road navigational rally in the United States. Every day for over a week, up to 50 teams of two women each navigate across rugged California and Nevada terrain with no cell phones or GPS systems to guide them. At night, they camp out, eat food prepared by a Michelin-starred chef, and share stories of their days with the other women. The Rebelle Rally was created by Emily Miller as a platform to build skills and confidence for women who might not otherwise try off-road racing. Participants in the rally end up taking away a lot more from the experience than just driving and navigation skills.

A couple years ago, I went through a two-day long navigation course, a sort of mini-Rebelle Rally, led by Emily. I have a terrible sense of direction, but here I had to use a compass and a protractor to figure out where to go next. The experience made me way more willing to trust myself to find my way home. On today’s show, Emily and I talk about what she has learned from the Rally, and she gives me countless gems of wisdom that she’s picked up over her career. I also had a chance to speak with a repeat Rebeller named Jo Hannah Hoehn, who gave me some insight on what it’s like to participate in the Rally.
